Picked up in Philadelphia
This 1968 Ford Mustang isn’t ours and isn’t for sale. A customer in the Netherlands asked us to pick it up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We drove there, looked at the car, filmed it and took it on the trailer for shipping to Rotterdam.
It’s a dark green 1968 coupe with a black vinyl top, with the 302 V8 under the bonnet. In the video you see it as we picked it up.

How our pickup service works
Found a car or motorcycle in America but can’t go there yourself? Then we pick it up for you. Philadelphia is a few hours’ drive from New York, where we are in the autumn. This is how it goes:
- You send us the listing or the seller’s details.
- We go and look, take photos and video, and check that the papers match the car.
- After your approval we pick up the car and take it to the shipper.
- The car goes in a container to the port of Rotterdam. From the east coast that takes about 4 weeks, from Los Angeles about 2 months.
You can also ask us to find a car for you. How buying and shipping work is explained at importing a car from the USA. That’s how we found a 1973 Chevrolet Nova for another customer, and picked up a 1965 Chevrolet C10 in Maryland.
The 1968 Ford Mustang
Ford launched the Mustang in 1964 and had an instant hit. For 1967 it got a bigger, wider body, and 1968 is the second year of that shape. The difference from 1967 is mainly in the details: the Mustang pony stands free in the grille, the side scoops have cleaner chrome and for the first time there are side marker lights on the fenders, required by new American safety rules.
Under the bonnet the 302 V8 was the big novelty: 302 cubic inches, about 5.0 litres. It replaced the 289. You could also choose a six-cylinder, the 390 big block and from April 1968 the 428 Cobra Jet.
The coupe was by far the most popular version. Of the more than 317,000 Mustangs from 1968, almost 250,000 were coupes, against about 42,000 fastbacks and 25,000 convertibles. The year became famous through the film Bullitt, in which Steve McQueen chases a 1968 Mustang GT fastback through San Francisco.
Importing a classic car: what comes on top?
A car from 1968 is well over 30 years old. If it’s in original condition, the EU import duty is usually 0% and a reduced VAT rate applies (9% in the Netherlands, 7% in Germany); customs decides per car. Then come the inspection and registration in your country. Many countries also have lower road tax or classic plates for a car this old. Read more in importing a classic from the USA.
